Connecting to the Network & Internet
How do you know if the jack is active?
If your new computer is replacing an old networked computer in the same location, then you can be reasonably certain that the jack is still active. If you're not certain if a computer was ever connected to that jack, it is probably not active and will require activation by ITS. If it is not too difficult, you can try connecting another networked computer to the same port using a long network cable.
topHow do you request that a jack be activated?
Fill out an ITS Request Services Form. Submit it to the budget officer of your department. The budget officer will complete the form with the correct account number, initial it and submit to the Computer Technology office for review. This office will pass the request along to the correct offices and usually within a week someone from ITS will come by to activate the jack.
topWhat if there is no jack in the room?
You must fill out an ITS telecommunications request form to request that a duplex jack be installed. It is to be submitted and processed as the ITS Request Services Form above. Once the jack is installed by ITS technicians, it must be activated as described above.
topHow do you locate your computer network information?
WinNT/2000/XP PC: open the Command Prompt window (under Programs > Accessories). At the prompt type: ipconfig /all.
Win98/ME PC, at the Start menu select Run. Type winipcfg in the text box that comes up, then press ok.
MAC(OS9), open the TCP/IP control panel and select File > Get Info.
OSX, open System Preferences. The ethernet address can be found under Network preferences.
How do you setup Eudora for NYUHome?
NYUHome has a web-based mail client built into it. However, if you prefer, you can continue to use Eudora. Eudora is a desktop application that helps you manage your electronic mail. ITS distributes the freeware version of Eudora for use with ITS e-mail accounts. A professional version of Eudora is available for a fee from. NYUHome supports both the POP and IMAP mail protocols, but the preferred method is IMAP. With IMAP, you can keep all of your mail on the server, in folders. That way, even if you use Eudora at home, Outlook at the office, and the web client while on the road, you will always have all of your mail folders available to you!
How do I use DIAL with NYUHome?
When you connect to NYU-NET with DIAL service, you are using a technology called Point-To-Point Protocol (PPP). PPP lets your home computer access NYU-NET and the worldwide Internet with a modem connection. With PPP access, you are able to use the same Internet applications that you might use on a computer with a direct (Ethernet) connection to NYU-NET -- such as web browsers, desktop e-mail programs, file transfer programs, and so on.
When connected with PPP, your computer temporarily becomes a part of NYU-NET. The one major difference between an on-campus computer that is directly attached to NYU-NET and a home computer with a PPP connection is the speed of that connection: the home computer uses a modem, and only relatively small quantities of data can be moved quickly across its link. Hence, some common Internet activities (such as downloading large files or accessing and displaying remote graphics files) may proceed slowly.
Please note:
NYU DIAL does not support PPP multilink.

How do I connect to NYU-NET with my Internet Service Provider?
Certain information sources, such as the Lexis-Nexis and PsycInfo databases, are available to students and researchers at NYU only if access is made from a computer system attached to NYU's network, NYU-NET. This restriction presents a problem for people traveling, or who work from home and use an Internet Service Provider (ISP) other than NYU itself.
NYU Proxy is the solution to this problem. You can configure your Internet browser, such as Netscape or Internet Explorer, to permit full access to such information sources from an external ISP or other external connection using NYU's proxy server (see instructions below). This allows your browser to employ a computer system here at the University to help it access your remote destination.
When accessing NYU-NET in this way, you will be prompted for your NYU NetID and password (which is same as your password for NYUHome). Please note the instructions provided here are for automatic configurations of proxy settings. You will obtain optimal performance from NYU's proxy server if you connect to it in this way.
For detailed instructions, check out these detailed instructions from ITS.
topYour computer cannot access your email account
If you cannot access websites either, then you most likely have a network problem. However, if you can access all other internet resources, your problem is probably email based.
topYour computer cannot access the web, SIS, HRIS or telnet to other systems
If your computer was never registered on NYU-Net, then you must register your computer with NYU-NET.
If this computer was connecting previously, but no longer works on the network, then check to make sure that the computer is connected to the data jack with a working CAT 5 network cable. If you're not sure the cable is working, test the connection with a cable from a working computer.
If the above options don't resolve the problem, contact the Computer Information Technology office helpline.
topHow do you request a business card email alias?
Once your Email account is activated you can request a business card alias.
